Tissue Parent Roll Moisture, Packaging & Storage: Complete Protection Guide

Tissue parent rolls leave the mill dry and strong, but they can still arrive damp, crushed or mouldy if they are not protected in the container or stored correctly in your warehouse. The three things that matter are moisture, packaging and storage. The short answer: finished tissue base paper is made to a moisture content of roughly 4–7% (measured under ISO 287, after conditioning at 23 °C and 50% relative humidity); export reels are wrapped in a moisture barrier and protected on the ends; and they should be kept in a dry, ventilated warehouse, off the floor and away from walls, with stock used on a first-in-first-out basis. This guide explains the moisture target, how HUAXIN packs reels for export, and how to store them so they stay convertible for months.

Quick answer: moisture, packaging and storage at a glance

Topic

Recommended practice

Moisture content

About 4–7%; condition at 23 °C / 50% RH and test under ISO 287 (oven-drying to constant mass)

Export packaging

Moisture-barrier (PE) wrap around each reel, end protection and corner/edge guards; reels secured and protected from the container floor and walls

Warehouse

Dry, ventilated, leak-free; keep roughly 50–60% RH; avoid hot, humid or steamy areas

Stacking

Off the floor on pallets, away from walls; respect stack-height limits; do not crush bottom reels

Stock rotation

First-in-first-out; use reels within the recommended shelf-life window and keep furnishes separated

Why moisture is the key quality variable

Tissue paper is hygroscopic — it absorbs or releases water to match the surrounding air. The moisture content therefore changes the behaviour of the sheet and the accuracy of every basis-weight measurement:

  • Too much moisture lowers strength, makes the reel heavy and soft, can crush the core under stacking, and — together with heat — creates the conditions for mould and for layers sticking together.

  • Too little moisture makes the paper brittle and dusty and increases static during unwinding and converting.

  • Correct moisture (about 4–7%) keeps the sheet strong, flexible and dimensionally stable.

Because GSM and strength are measured against a defined atmosphere, the standard method conditions samples at 23 °C and 50% relative humidity and determines moisture under ISO 287 by weighing, oven-drying and re-weighing to constant mass. Basis-weight tolerance is typically within about ±3% for a full container and ±5% for a single sample. For the full inspection routine, see the tissue jumbo roll quality inspection checklist.

How HUAXIN packs parent rolls for export

Packaging is designed to keep moisture out and to protect the reel edges and core during handling and sea transit. A typical export pack includes:

  • Moisture-barrier wrap: each reel is wrapped in a polyethylene (PE) film or equivalent moisture barrier and sealed, so humidity in the container cannot reach the paper.

  • End and edge protection: the reel faces and outer edges are protected, with corner/edge guards where needed, to stop knocks and forklift damage from crushing the creped layers.

  • Core and face protection: the 76 mm (3 inch) core and the reel ends are kept clean and undamaged so the reel mounts cleanly on the unwinder.

  • Container loading: reels are blocked and braced so they do not shift, and are kept off direct contact with the container floor and walls, which can sweat or carry moisture; desiccant can be added for humid routes or seasons.

On arrival, check that the wrap is intact and the reels feel dry; if any wrap is torn or a reel feels damp, set that reel aside and inspect it before running it on the machine. The loading arrangement and reel counts are covered in the how many tissue jumbo rolls fit in a container guide.

How to store parent rolls in your warehouse

Good storage is simple and prevents almost all moisture and crushing problems:

  • Keep it dry and ventilated: use a leak-free, well-ventilated warehouse, ideally around 50–60% relative humidity; avoid storing reels near steam, wash-down areas, open doors, exterior walls or direct sunlight.

  • Off the floor and away from walls: keep reels on pallets or racks with an air gap, never directly on a concrete floor or against a wall that can transmit damp or condensation.

  • Control stacking: follow the stack-height limits so the weight of upper reels does not deform the lower reels or their cores; store reels upright where recommended.

  • Rotate stock: use first-in-first-out so older reels do not sit for long periods; keep virgin, recycled and bamboo furnishes clearly separated and labelled.

  • Protect during monsoon and winter: in humid or rainy seasons reduce door opening, keep the barrier wrap on until use, and add dehumidification where practical.

Mould, shelf life and what to do if reels get damp

Mould needs persistent moisture and warmth, so it is almost always a sign of damaged packaging, a wet container or a damp warehouse — not a paper defect. Practical guidance:

  • Shelf life: dry, correctly packed tissue reels can be stored for many months; to be safe, plan to convert them within the supplier's recommended shelf-life window (commonly expressed as several months to around a year) and always use older stock first.

  • If a reel feels damp: move it to a dry, ventilated area, remove the wrap, and let it condition back to the room atmosphere before testing; check the core and inner layers, which dry the slowest.

  • If you see mould or a musty smell: quarantine the reel and do not convert it into face or food-contact products; document it with photos and contact the supplier, as damp-damaged reels should not be used for hygiene products.

  • Prevention: intact moisture-barrier wrap, a dry warehouse and stock rotation are the reliable controls; reels supplied to the standard 4–7% moisture at the mill will stay dry if the barrier and storage are maintained.

All HUAXIN reels use the same format — widths 200–2850 mm, basis weight 11–42 GSM, diameter up to 1150 mm on a standard 76 mm core; see the tissue jumbo roll sizes and core size guide. Frequently asked questions

Q: What is the moisture content of tissue paper parent rolls?
A: Typically about 4–7%. Samples are conditioned at 23 °C and 50% RH and moisture is measured under ISO 287 by oven-drying to constant mass.

Q: How are jumbo rolls packed for export?
A: Each reel is sealed in a moisture-barrier (PE) wrap with end and edge protection, then loaded and braced in the container and kept off the floor and walls; desiccant can be added for humid routes.

Q: How should tissue rolls be stored?
A: In a dry, ventilated, leak-free warehouse around 50–60% RH, on pallets off the floor and away from walls, with stack-height limits and first-in-first-out rotation.

Q: Does humidity damage tissue paper?
A: Persistent high humidity makes the sheet damp, weaker and prone to layers sticking, and — with heat — can lead to mould. Keeping the barrier wrap intact and storing reels dry prevents this.

Q: Can tissue paper rolls get mouldy?
A: Only if they stay damp and warm, usually from torn packaging, a wet container or a damp warehouse. Quarantine and inspect any mouldy or musty reel and do not use it for facial or food-contact products.

Q: How long can tissue parent rolls be stored?
A: Dry, correctly packed reels can be kept for many months; convert them within the supplier's recommended shelf-life window, use the oldest stock first, and keep the moisture wrap on until a reel is needed.
