If you run a tissue converting or rewinding line, profitability comes down to one question: how many finished, sellable rolls do you get from each mother roll? Converting a mother roll (also called a parent roll or jumbo roll) into smaller sales rolls looks simple, but yield depends on your equipment, the base-paper specs, and the material lost in threading, splicing, edge trimming and roll changes. This guide covers the full mother roll to smaller roll conversion, the equipment, real yield per ton and per reel, and the main sources of waste.
Converting is the finishing stage in which a large, unfinished reel of tissue base paper — the mother roll — is unwound, embossed, perforated, rewound and cut into the small rolls consumers buy. The mother roll is not sold on the shelf; it is the raw material converters turn into a finished product. The same base reel can be converted into toilet rolls, kitchen towels, napkins or facial tissue depending on the line and settings.
Mount the mother roll on the unwinder / shaftless stand.
Thread the web and set tension control.
Emboss the web (optional).
Perforate at the chosen sheet length.
Rewind onto a core to target log length/diameter.
Cut logs into individual rolls with a log saw.
Bag/seal and pack into cartons.
Measure | Typical figure |
|---|---|
Finished toilet rolls per ton (2-ply, 300 sheets) | ~11,110 |
Finished roll weight | ~90 g |
Mother roll weight (1,850 mm, dia 1,150) | ~500 kg |
Finished rolls per mother roll (theoretical) | ~5,555 |
Mother rolls per 40ft HQ | ~26 (12–13 tons) |
Finished rolls per 40ft HQ of mothers (theoretical) | ~144,430 |
Napkin sheets per ton (300 mm) | ~653,594 |
Napkin mother roll weight (300 mm, dia 1,150) | ~110 kg |
Napkin sheets per mother roll (theoretical) | ~71,895 |
These are theoretical yields before waste; real output is lower after threading, splices, edge trim and roll-change tails.

Match the mother roll to your rewinder: width, diameter, weight and GSM/ply must suit the line. See our toilet tissue parent roll guide, browse our toilet paper jumbo rolls, or view our virgin wood pulp jumbo roll for premium tissue.
